CURRENT PROJECT: In our June 5 E-News, Rabbi Caruso shared how Mishkan Or was working closely with HIAS to welcome a family from Afghanistan arriving to Cleveland as refugees. HIAS is one of the longest-standing U.S. groups engaged in this vital work.
Our Tikkun Olam committee reports that housing appears to now be secure for the Afghan family of four. We are seeking help in advocacy and networking for jobs for one family member, a 29-year-old father with work experience and degrees in finance and business administration. Can you help? Or might you volunteer support in other ways? Mishkan Or member Vivian Singer is working with Tikkun Olam committee co-chairs Laura Creed and Patti London, and several other volunteers. Contact Vivian Singer here to help or you can make a donation here, click here and choose HIAS in the drop-down menu.
Our community has a deep-rooted legacy in social justice, with a history of involvement in Greater Cleveland Congregations a grassroots coalition of over 30 local faith communities and allied organizations. Through GCC’s commitment to community organizing, we address systemic injustices, leading to meaningful reforms in healthcare, education, criminal justice gun violence, and employment. For further information, and to learn more about GCC, contact core team leader David Biegel at david.biegel@case.edu.
The Interfaith Group Against Hate (IGAH) is a group of faith-based congregations who have joined together to be a voice in society to challenge the rise in hate groups and white supremacy. The group, which represents many religious traditions, plans educational events, relationship-building events, and strategic research toward action.

NEW – Mishkan Or and our Interfaith Group Against Hate have led public protest and activism after the May burning of 100+ Beachwood library books on Jewish, Black, & LGBTQ+ values. Help us acquire 10 books for every one burned! After yesterday’s Shavuot Book Fair, 2 more are planned: Sat, June 7, 11am-6pm at Pride in the CLE (Fairmount Presbyterian Church table) & June 19 (Juneteenth) 10am-6pm at Loganberry Books.
Our ongoing work will be integrated into broader social justice efforts, allowing congregants to collectively set priorities and shape our future engagement. Together, we will explore various initiatives and educational programs while developing and deepening relationships with community partners including, but not limited to, Elizabeth Baptist Church and Rid-All Green Partnership.
